Christchurch to Lake Tekapo

When we left Christchurch for Mt. Cook, we stopped first for the night at Lake Tekapo. Before we got to the lake, we went along, and across the Rakaia River and Gorge. There are three species of salmon that spawn in the Rakaia: the Atlantic, the Sockeye and the Chinook. After the combined USA/Canada salmon fishing industry, the salmon fishing in New Zealand is second? The river is way down (top), but there are several deep holes further downstream.

The Church of The Good Shepherd is located at the edge of Lake Tekapo, which it is said the church is one of the most photographed structures in the country. It has a plate glass window in the front of the church, behind the altar area, which looks out oto the lake and Mt. Cook. It is quite like the Church of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton Nat'l. Park in Wyoming.

The water in the lakes (and rivers) is a beautiful color, which it gets from the sediment of the glacial flow. As the glacier flows towards the river, it is grinding the stone and earth to a fine powder, described as being like flour. the "powder" is held in suspension in the water, refracting the sunlight with the intense aquamarine color
