Rocks at Moeraki Boulders

Formed in a process called "concretion", these boulders are formed somewhat like a pearl is formed in an oyster. Starting with a small pebble, piece of bark, a stick, etc., the mud packs around the object and then continues to coat itself with more packed mud, drying hard as cement. These rocks are virtually perfect in their 'roundness' and many have been buried for hundreds of years near the beach. A particularly high tide a few years ago exposed many new ones. You can see how large they are in proportion to a person (Ken). After a period of time, they revert back to what they started as -- just a broken rock!!
